What do you think would be the hardest trial Jesus could lead you through in a walk of uncompromising faith? Death of a child? Loss of job and home? Physical pain and suffering? All those are very traumatic and difficult to endure but they are not the hardest lessons God gives us as we follow Him.The simple lesson of waiting on God is the hardest of all.
Addicted to doing
Sounds strange, doesn’t it? After all, waiting is the absence of action. How can waiting be the hardest lesson we have to endure? There is a good reason for this. Waiting is hard because it exposes our ‘self’ nature. In all other lessons we can learn from God, but our ‘self’ nature can hide. In the broad daylight of waiting, however, ‘self’ has no place to go. It will come out with a vengeance when we try to wait on God or show any faith in Jesus.
‘Self is addicted to the ‘do’, pushing us to action, trusting in man, becoming our own savior. ‘Self’ does not trust in anything but itself. Spirit rests in the ‘be’, knowing that God is our Savior and is completely trustworthy. Spirit rests in Him and waits for His lead. Think that waiting on God is easy? Try it.
Settle yourself down to wait on God and see how long you last. As long as you think you can wait, God will always make you wait longer. Why? He isn’t cruel, but He wants you to learn that when you wait on Him, He will come to you. Not on your timetable but His. Remember that He is a sovereign being and you are to serve Him, not the other way around.
The hard lesson of waiting
Waiting is the hardest lesson we will be called to endure but is key to our spiritual maturity. When you can learn to lesson of waiting on the Father, resisting the wailing of your ‘self’ to just ‘do’ something, you will find a peace you have not known before. Today, as you are busy with all the activities of life, think on this. Take time to wait on God. Leave it open ended. Don’t put a time limit on Him; just wait. You will find a reward you never expected and a lesson you’ll never forget.

Yes! You nailed it. As I was walking Milo this morning Jesus reminded me of a plaque that used to hang in the living room of our house. It was a picture of an eagle with a verse. The verse? Isaiah 40:31. That was His inspiration to me for this blog. Thank you for that blessed confirmation!

Good word Homer & Wanda. This makes me think of Psalm 27:14: “Wait patiently for the Lord. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the Lord.” As you say, waiting is not for the faint of heart. I believe it is an art, an act of the will based in love, love of the One who loves us best and most. I love how the psalmist links bravery and courage to waiting. So very true. Thank you for the insightful comment. Waiting is a choice, yes, for sure, but as you say it is waiting for the One we love so dearly!

I would never have guessed waiting was the hardest lesson, my mind thought about a myriad of other things but never waiting. Now light has been shed, I concur. Waiting certainly reveals my impatient heart, my indecisive self, mt rebellious and stiff-necked nature, my stubborn will and my absolute need for Christ. For over 10 years ABBA has been sending the same message to me, “wait”. Oh how frustrating it has been to hear that initially but the more He says wait, is the deeper I feel drawn to Him. Thank you for this insightful post.
You are so welcome. We can readily relate. God has had us waiting in this small motel room for 2 years now. The small space with a bird and dog, lack of privacy and waiting has tested us far beyond being hungry and homeless. 🙂 At least the ol’ ‘self’ is getting whittled down to size and Jesus is growing in us more each day. We stand with you in the waiting, knowing our Lord is in control.

Hmmm. I can’t agree less sis. It can be tough and true your self comes to light in such times. If we really do trust God as we claim to or not.
But then, getting on in it with time, makes us see more – looking at His intent in why He allowed us wait even though He could have done it seconds after we asked Him for it. ?
